A 23-year-old man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident in Newport Beach early Thursday morning.

The collision was reported shortly before 3 a.m. on the Pacific Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive. All lanes in the area were briefly closed during the investigation. The victim was identified as Travis Marton from Valencia.

Within 10 minutes, Laguna Beach police stopped a vehicle with front-end collision damage and the driver was detained.

Newport Beach police determined the driver, identified as Ronald Aviles, was connected to the fatal hit-and-run and arrested him. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

Aviles' bail was set at $50,000.

Marton's family released a statement on their loss, "Travis was an intelligent, wonderful, kind-hearted, young man with a very adventurous attitude. He had just finished his college education and was about to embark on an amazing life. We will miss him always."

The incident continued to be under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Bill Hume at 949-644-3746 or whume@nbpd.org.

Valencia Man, 23, Killed In Suspected Hit And Run In Newport

A Valencia man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run collision in Orange County on Thursday morning, officials said.

Travis Marton, 23, of Valencia, was believed to have been killed on a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway inNewport Beach on New Year’s Eve sometime before 2:56 a.m., according to Sgt. Rachel Johnson.
“A passerby motorist said he thought that there was a dead person in the roadway,” she said.
Officials received a report shortly before 3 a.m. of a man reportedly lying in the road in a southbound lane.
The collision reportedly took place on a stretch of PCH known as East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive, Johnson said.
When NBPD officers responded, they found Marton, who was declared dead at the scene.
Marton was found near the intersection, and officers believe he was trying to cross the road when he was struck and killed.
Officers immediately put out an alert to surrounding law enforcement agencies looking for a vehicle that might have sustained collision damage.
Laguna Beach Police Department officers found Ronald Aviles, 56, of San Clemente, a short time later driving a white minivan that appeared to have been in a collision, Johnson said.
Aviles was questioned and then arrested for a felony hit and run, Johnson said, noting additional charges might be added later because the investigation was only 12 hours old and ongoing.
Officers suspect he “left the scene of an accident causing great bodily injury or death,” she said.
Drugs and alcohol are not expected to be factors in the crash at this time.
Aviles is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He’s expected to be arraigned in an Orange County courthouse within the next few days.

Accident Kills Lake Forest Motorcyclist

Obituary: Steven David Muller, 29

A Lake Forest motorcyclist died Wednesday afternoon in an area hospital from injuries sustained in a noontime accident at the intersection of Peachwood and Palmwood Drive, authorities said.
The 29-year-old man was driving on Peachwood toward Palmwood Drive when a car sitting at a stop sign on Palmwood pulled out into Peachwood traffic, Orange County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Angel Andrade said.

The motorcyclist, who was driving behind a pick-up truck, braked to avoid the car and slid out, Andrade said.
Investigators believe the driver of the car may not have seen the motorcycle behind the pick-up, which was turning onto Palmwood as the car pulled out onto Peachwood, he said.
Sheriff's deputies and Orange County firefighters responded to the accident and transported the motorcyclist, identified Thursday as

Steven David Muller,

to Mission Hospital, Andrade said. Muller, who received medical treatment at the scene of the accident, initially seemed stable, according to the sheriff's department.

But at the hospital he was rushed into surgery. Muller died at 2:48 p.m. from injuries sustained in the collision, less than three hours after the accident, according to  records.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, Andrade said.
