A 32-year-old San Juan Capistrano man was convicted Thursday for a hit-and-run accident that left one woman dead and a man seriously injured, authorities said.
Jason Michael Roberts pleaded guilty to two felony counts of hit-and-run with injury and now faces up to four years and eight months in state prison, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
A 1993 Toyota Camry struck 24-year-old Oriana Millan and a male member of the group in the crosswalk. Millan, the mother of a 5-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was taken to a hospital with a fractured skull and wrist.
The driver of the Camry, who authorities soon identified as Roberts, fled the scene, driving 12 miles to Laguna Beach before his car overheated and broke down.
Roberts initially told Laguna Beach officers that he had struck an animal on Pacific Coast Highway, but authorities say the damage made it obvious that he had struck a person. He was taken into custody after police tied him to the Huntington Beach hit-and-run.
Roberts is scheduled to return to court Aug. 3 for sentencing.
